What is a Bigha?

The Bigha is one of the most traditional and widely used units for land measurement in North India. Used across Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Rajasthan, it represents a significant tract of agricultural land. However, it is not a standardized unit like the Acre or Hectare.

Pucca Bigha vs. Kacha Bigha

The biggest confusion arises from the two variants of Bigha:

• Pucca Bigha (Standard): Used for legal revenue records and official documents. It is typically 27,225 Square Feet (3,025 Square Yards).
• Kacha Bigha: An informal unit used by local landlords and farmers in verbal deals. It usually measures one-third of a Pucca Bigha (approx 6,800 to 9,000 Sq Ft) but varies wildly by village.
